I’ve never been able to shake the haunting feeling of this specific house call because of the significance it would take on later in my own life – and it reminds me, of course, that even doctors can meet the same inevitable fate of becoming patients.
When I tried to tend to the diabetes my father developed later in life, I thought of that woman’s shaking, pale face.
And when I looked at his limbs – a double amputee, and recognized he was in renal failure, I thought of how he fought for a life, when she could not fight for her own.
And I thought of how in his twilight years, he was experiencing the same discomfort and dis-ease he had so seamlessly kept at bay for everyone else.
But even so, I knew we were lucky, my family. We could afford my father’s insulin. We could afford to do what it took to take care of him.

I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that would never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. I know that the irony strikes with the force of a cartoon anvil, now.
So they hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents’ car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.
I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all the subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.
I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

And I realized he doesn't know where the women's room is in his office. So I start looking around for moving boxes, figuring they just moved in, but I don't see any. And so I said, "Did you just move into this office?" And he said, "No, we've been here about a year." And I said, "Are you telling me that I am the only woman to have pitched a deal in this office in a year?" And he looked at me, and he said, "Yeah. Or maybe you're the only one who had to go to the bathroom."So the question is, how are we going to fix this? How do we change these numbers at the top? How do we make this different?

In recent years, more and more lectures are being given on campus. They are organized either by the departments or by the students unions with an aim to improve the students quality both mentally and academically. These lectures are usually in series and on different topics, such as arts, life, economy, psychology and world issues.
Generally speaking, the advantages of good lectures are various. First they broaden the students knowledge horizon and cultivate interest in different fields. Second, they make the life of the students colorful and enjoyable.
With these merits, lectures are just complementary and subordinate to our school work. If students spend too much time attending lectures, their regular study will be affected and disturbed. So, in my opinion, the students should, on the one hand, do their class work and homework well first, on the other hand, set as more time as possible to attend good lectures which are helpful to our life and study.

it is been incredible to hear so many stories.during the two years prior campaigning, traveling around the country. one of the unique things about this experience, my father was running for president. people would come up to youwherever you were and tell you their stories. with suchtremendous detail, and tell you of their hardest challenges, and share with you things in a way they neither -- never would have.they would never open themselves up to you in the same way theydo during the process of a campaign. now today, being part of this administration. i feel blessed for the candor in which people share their ideas and personal stories. linda and i were together in baltimore just days after the inauguration. we did a roundtable with small business owners, predominantly female, hosted by the national urban league. one of those women who actually i brought her to the white house a few months later is named lisa phillips. she had a small's ness. she told me her storyand i think -- we were all crying. it was so amazing. she started out homeless. she is now engaged. this spring she got her mastersdegree. she has a small but thriving small business and party planning. she is volunteering with homeless youth in baltimore. so this is -- these types of stories forever change you. it is unbelievable to hear the purser variants, the grant, the energy. i know she is going to make an enormous impact not just in her business but her community. we talk about small business, how it is going to grow our economy and benefit american workers, butthe amount of philanthropy being done on the local level by small business is a norm is enormous. i'm sure each of you can share your own stories just about how you are able to give act and you do in such a tremendous way. lisa story was moving to me.

While the percentage of working women has dramatically increased, corporate expectations have remained all-too stagnant.
Today, in the United States, women now comprise 47 percent of the workforce.
In the vast majority of American homes with children, all parents work – and in 40 percent of households, women are the primary breadwinners.
Yet, work environments and social institutions still largely operate on a single-earner mindset, in which one parent – traditionally the mother – stays at home to provide full time care.
All too often, our workplace culture has failed to treat women with appropriate respect. This takes many forms, including harassment, which can never be tolerated.
Traditional and rigid corporate culture also fails working mothers – and fathers – who work long and often wildly unpredictable hours and get little time off.
Too many mothers dread telling their boss they must stay home to take care of a sick child – and many must go back to work just weeks after having a new baby – because they can’t afford not to.
Every day, working parents are forced to make hard but unavoidable choices.

But it also heightens our sense of outrage and speeds up arguments, depriving us of the time and space for careful reflection.
Bombarded with notifications, pressured to respond before the media cycle turns over, we tap out our position – our opposition – in seconds. It’s easy to be against something in fewer than 280 characters. It’s far more difficult to articulate what you are for – and to do it at warp speed.

Hello! Dear judges,
Today, I am gonna share my first special memory. I explored Vanuatu last August. Vanuatu is a Pacific island adventure far beyond any notions of cruise-ship ports and flashy resorts. Deserted beaches, ancient culture, remote and rugged islands and world-class diving are just a small part of this magnetism of this scattered 80-plus island archipelago.
The capital is Port Vila. It was used to be a British and French colony, so a lot of people speak English and French. Vanuatu is a natural place, the sky is very blue, the sea water is very clear, the local law does not allow any fishing, you can see fish swimming around the sea. The vegetable market is lots of vegetables and fruits that I have not been seen before.
It takes a little time to afford a healthy sense of adventure to truly explore Vanuatu's islands, but it's worth every bit of it. Thank you!

We can't live in space, we don't have the food growing capacity out there yet for lots of people to survive. If we treat the earth like the city dump it becomes dirty and unlivable. If we treat it well by being eco-conscious, the earth stays a clean place, perfect for living, for ourselves and for our children. We are now living in a highly industrialized world. The expanding industries are providing us with more and more convenience and comfort.

首先，感謝在座的各位老師來參加這次活動，給我們捧場，我代表我們英語組對大家的到來表示衷心的感謝。
我當班主任，又教英語，雙重的身份讓我有更多的空間、更多的途徑去做直接或間接能影響英語教學質量的事，所以下面我就圍繞班主任這一角色，談談做班主任以及教英語的零零碎碎的感受，大家就當是教育雜談吧。
教育家蘇霍姆林斯基說：“教學與教育的技巧和藝術就在于，要使每一個兒童的力量和可能性發揮出來。”學生學習的力量需要老師的挖掘，借名人名言，所以，我給自己的講座取了個洋氣的題目：《借力·用力·給力》，但所講的內容卻都是土辦法，土經驗、小招術。有點類似于穿著旗袍，卻拿著鋤頭去干農活。下面我就從借力用力\給力這三個方面來談談班主任在學科中的作用發揮。
一、借力：利用班主任角色，借力而教
我主要通過以下三個途徑：
1、借班會課，規劃目標，給成長借力。
有清晰的目標，生活才能心中有底，知道自己本月做事要點，分得清輕重。目標的制訂，目標的執行關系著學習的成敗。為此，我利用班會課的時間，讓學生制訂“每月勵志目標”，并交流分享，月末班會課上作一月執行情況反思小結。

2、借“考試挑戰賽”，給學習借力。
所謂“考試挑戰賽”，其實就是期中、期末考前讓學生自己給自己的考試訂一成績目標，然后找到挑戰對手，與對方比賽考試成績。考試前讓學生自己定成績，能激發他們的內在潛能與動力，對他們的積極性復習還是起到一定的促進作用。
3、借助“夢想星搭檔”，給學困生借力。
班級里有些學生學習有困難，英語單詞拼寫、單詞背誦難度較大。如果教師一個一個抓落實，不管是時間還是精力總有欠缺。所以我在平時的教學管理中，組建由優秀學生負責結對學困生的幫扶計劃，并盜用中央臺節目名稱，取名叫“夢想星搭檔”，每位優秀學生專門負責一位學困生，督促學困生的英語單詞拼寫與單詞背誦，讓他們及時去幫助學困生，促使學困生成長。
我的英語學科教學與班主任工作是交叉進行，我不僅扮演一名任課教師，也利用扮演班主任的角色，借班主任之東風，落實英語教學之任務。
二、用力：教育是一份承諾，用心才能用力。
三年一輪回，每一個三年，我都要給自已一個承諾：“家長把孩子交給我，那就是我的家人，不管好他們，怎么說得過去。”英語教學方面，我不敢松懈，一“盯”，二“溝通”，雙管齊下，盡力把事做細。
我有以下三種方法。
1、盯住英語學習的要點，把力用到實處。
第一分層把關，緊盯單詞落實。
農村孩子平時家長管理學習的時間少，雙休日很少有英語補課輔導，所以在學校，教師要把他們盯緊，抓落實。對于盯單詞落實，我采用分層把關，過關檢查落實的土辦法。具體做法為：
課時單詞讀音過關幫扶檢查（組長負責：糾正讀音，單詞抽背）
課時單詞過關聽寫（教師負責：全班聽寫）
個別學生聽寫過關檢查（教師負責：不合格學生重新聽寫）
單元單詞過關檢測結果展示（組長負責：每單元通過檢查后并簽名）

第二我注重積累，緊盯閱讀訓練。
學生每天堅持完成一篇完型與閱讀
并且準備了陌生單詞·短語積累本
并在期中期末進行優秀單詞本展示

第三重視面批，緊盯《作業本》質量。
傳統作業本采用流水批改，統一訂證。但感覺學生拿到批改本后，只是瞄一眼就置之不理，老師辛辛苦苦的批改，在學生的眼里就是紅色的勾與叉，不能化為學生查漏補缺的動力，批改效率不高。初三時，我嘗試著用小組負責面批的方式做作業本訂證，感覺效果還不錯。具體做法是：
把班級學生分為十組，每組四人，教師面批十個小組長《作業本》，當面講解訂證；各小組長按照老師的做法面批三位組員的《作業本》，并講解訂證；單元教學結束后，我在課堂上只做易錯題的.訂證。
教學本來沒有新鮮事，教師唯一要做的只是用心落實知識點，用心把事情做有趣了，吸引學生，把簡單的事做細，做持久，這樣也就是不簡單了。
2、溝通在教育的關鍵點上，把力用到“心”處。
抓英語知識點的落實很重要，但如果只盯著成績，忽略師生的溝通，忽視語言的激勵，容易缺乏持久的教育力量。教書的同時還是不能忽視情感的溝通。
⑴做好班級學生談話記錄本，讓溝通成為習慣。
經常與學生談話交流，及時發現他們的優缺點，常常鼓勵叮嚀，讓師生情感融洽，親其師，信其道。（照片）
⑵找準溝通契機，能讓學困生從“自我放逐”中醒來。
特殊學生除了要教師的耐心外，還要用“獨家秘方”，因人而治。比如我班有個學生叫徐振炎，他上課屬迷糊派，下課屬好動派。英語作業基本兩種狀態：要么不做不交；要么亂做，填滿空格上交。我除了沒事找事，經常找他談話外，還努力尋找他身上的“防守漏洞”，發現他喜歡運動，就借學校運動會之機讓他參加1000米長跑。他跑步時意外摔倒，手、腳、膝蓋都血淋淋的，我心痛不已，他卻說沒事。班會課上，我對他的精神大肆宣揚。此后課堂上，尤其我的英語課上，他比以前投入多了，精力也就不放在“搞破壞”上了。
